STUDIES IN 1 JOHN

ATTITUDE TOWARD COMMANDMENTS

1 John 2:3-6 (KJV)

3And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments4He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him6He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.

1 John 2:3-6 (AMP)

3And this is how we may discern [[a]daily, by experience] that we are coming to know Him [to perceive, recognize, understand, and become better acquainted with Him]: if we keep (bear in mind, observe, practice) His teachings (precepts, commandments)4Whoever says, I know Him [I perceive, recognize, understand, and am acquainted with Him] but fails to keep and obey His commandments (teachings) is a liar, and the Truth [[b]of the Gospel] is not in him. 5But he who keeps (treasures) His Word [who bears in mind His precepts, who observes His message in its entirety], truly in him has the love of and for God been perfected (completed, reached maturity). By this we may perceive (know, recognize, and be sure) that we are in Him: 6Whoever says he abides in Him ought [as [c]a personal debt] to walk and conduct himself in the same way in which He walked and conducted Himself.

1.    KNOWING GOD v.3

Ø  Simple – keep His commandments

2.    NOT KNOWING GOD v.4

Ø  Don’t follow His commandments

Ø  Equals = you are a liar & the truth (of the Gospel) is not in you

Ø  Claim: “I know God” = I perceive, recognize, understand, and am acquainted with Him (Amp)

3.    KEEPING THE WORD V.5

Ø  Treasures (Amp)

Ø  Those who “who bears in mind His precepts, who observes His message in its entirety” (Amp)

Ø  truly in him has the love of and for God been perfected (completed, reached maturity)” (Amp)

4.    TALK & WALK SHOULD BE THE SAME

Ø  If you say you abide (live) in Him like you owe Him (which we do)

Ø  You must conduct (live) your life just like Jesus did

Ø  FOOTNOTE: He will help you

LET US “TALK THE WALK” AND “WALK THE TALK”.

STUDIES IN 1 JOHN

REMOVEING SIN & KEEPING IT GONE

1 John 1:9-10, 2:1-2 (KJV)

9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. 1My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous2And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1 John 1:9-10, 2:1-2 (AMP)

9If we [freely] admit that we have sinned and confess our sins, He is faithful and just (true to His own nature and promises) and will forgive our sins [dismiss our lawlessness] and [continuously] cleanse us from all unrighteousness [everything not in conformity to His will in purpose, thought, and action]10If we say (claim) we have not sinned, we contradict His Word and make Him out to be false and a liar, and His Word is not in us [the divine message of the Gospel is not in our hearts]. 1MY LITTLE children, I write you these things so that you may not violate God's law and sin. But if anyone should sin, we have an Advocate (One Who will intercede for us) with the Father--[it is] Jesus Christ [the all] righteous [upright, just, Who conforms to the Father's will in every purpose, thought, and action]. 2And He [[a]that same Jesus Himself] is the propitiation (the atoning sacrifice) for our sins, and not for ours alone but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

1.    PROCESS

ü  Confess

ü  He forgives & cleanses

ü  From ALL unrighteousness (see underlined AMP v.9)

2.    PROFESSION

ü  If we say we have no sin (wrong confession)

ü  Admit we were sinners

3.    PRACTICE

ü  Don’t sin

ü  If we do, get our heavenly attorney to intercede with the Father for us

ü  Who is this attorney? (see 2:1b AMP underlined)

ü  Also see highlighted v.2 AMP

4.    PARTICIPATION

ü  Sin removal for us & for the WHOLE world (if they confess & believe)

LET US REJOICE IN OUR SIN REMOVAL AND SHARE THE OPPORTUNITY WITH OTHERS THIS WEEK.

STUDIES IN 1 JOHN

THE SIN REMOVER - JESUS

1 John 1:5-8 (KJV)

5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all6If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin8If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

1 John 1:5-8 (AMP)

5And this is the message [the message of [a]promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [[b]no, not in any way]6[So] if we say we are partakers together and enjoy fellowship with Him when we live and move and are walking about in darkness, we are [both] speaking falsely and do not live and practice the Truth [which the Gospel presents]. 7But if we [really] are living and walking in the Light, as He [Himself] is in the Light, we have [true, unbroken] fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses (removes) us from all sin and guilt [keeps us cleansed from sin in all its forms and manifestations]. 8If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners], we delude and lead ourselves astray, and the Truth [which the Gospel presents] is not in us [does not dwell in our hearts].

1.    GOD IS LIGHT

Ø  God is THE source of spiritual illumination and strength (Encarta Dictionary)

Ø  He is also the source of ALL light of any type

Ø  In Him is no form of darkness of any kind

2.    IF WE SAY…

Ø  That we have fellowship with Him: fellowship = a sharing of common interests, goals, experiences or views (Encarta Dictionary)

Ø  We lie and do not admit the truth about our real relationship with Him

3.    IF WE WALK…

Ø  In the light (in true spiritual illumination and strength)

Ø  We have fellowship one with another in Christ like lifestyle

Ø  AND Jesus’ blood cleanses us from ALL sin (all forms of spiritual darkness)

4.    IF WE SAY…

Ø  We have no sin (see v.8 AMP)

Ø  We deceive ourselves

Ø  The truth is not in us

LET US WALK IN GOD’S LIGHT SO HIS TRUTH WILL BE IN US AND OUR SIN WILL TRULY BE GONE.

STUDIES IN 1 JOHN

THE PURPOSE FOR WRITING THIS LETTER

1 John 1:1-4 KJV

1That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 2(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 3That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

1 John 1

1[WE ARE writing] about the Word of Life [[a]in] Him Who existed from the beginning, Whom we have heard, Whom we have seen with our [own] eyes, Whom we have gazed upon [for ourselves] and have touched with our [own] hands. 2And the Life [[b]an aspect of His being] was revealed (made manifest, demonstrated), and we saw [as eyewitnesses] and are testifying to and declare to you the Life, the eternal Life [[c]in Him] Who already existed with the Father and Who [actually] was made visible (was revealed) to us [His followers]. 3What we have seen and [ourselves] heard, we are also telling you, so that you too may [d]realize and enjoy fellowship as partners and partakers with us. And [this] fellowship that we have [which is a [e]distinguishing mark of Christians] is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ (the Messiah). 4And we are now writing these things to you so that our joy [in seeing you included] may be full [and [f]your joy may be complete].

1.    STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

·         Writing about the Word – Jesus

·         Existed from the beginning

·         Heard, seen and touched by the Apostles

2.    STATEMENT OF VERACITY

·         This life (of Jesus) was made clear to the Apostles & others

·         Have seen it, bear witness and show you the eternity of Christ which was with the Father and made clear to them

3.    STATEMENT OF REVELATION

·         Declaration: what we have seen and heard we share with you

·         Why? So you can have fellowship with us, with the Father and with Jesus

·         Why?  So your joy may be complete

LET US BE JOYFUL IN THE REVELATION OF JESUS THIS WEEK AND FOREVER!
