STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 39

THE TRAGEDY OF ISRAEL’S UNBELIEF

Romans 9:1-5 (KJV)

9 I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost, 2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart. 3 For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh: 4 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises; 5 Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.

Romans 9:1-5 (CEB)

9 I’m speaking the truth in Christ—I’m not lying, as my conscience assures me with the Holy Spirit: 2 I have great sadness and constant pain in my heart. 3 I wish I could be cursed, cut off from Christ if it helped my brothers and sisters, who are my flesh-and-blood relatives. 4 They are Israelites. The adoption as God’s children, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the worship, and the promises belong to them. 5 The Jewish ancestors are theirs, and the Christ descended from those ancestors. He is the one who rules over all things, who is God, and who is blessed forever. Amen.

1.    PAUL’S SADNESS & GRIEF V.1-4A

Ø  Source: the condition of his people, Israel

Ø  Cause: their failure to achieve the plan of God for themselves

2.    WHAT ISRAEL WAS MISSING V.4B

Ø  These blessings: the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the Law, the worship and the promises

Ø  We will see why they were missing these things later in the chapter

3.    CHRIST CAME FROM ISRAEL, FOR ISRAEL – FIRST V.5

Ø  They missed that Christ was Jewish, coming from their ancestors

Ø  They couldn’t conceive that He rules over all things, is God and is blessed forever

WE MUST BELIEVE IN CHRIST JESUS TO RECEIVE GOD’S BENEFITS.

STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 38

ARE YOU CONVINCED?

Romans 8:37-39 (KJV)

37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:37-39 (CEB)

37 But in all these things we win a sweeping victory through the one who loved us. 38 I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers 39 or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.

1.    MORE THAN CONQUERORS V.37

Romans 8:29 For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?

Ø  Because God purposed to predestinate us, we have already won

2.    I AM PERSUADED, CONVINCED V.38a

Ø  Paul was – are you?

3.    NOTHING CAN SEPARATE US FROM GOD’S LOVE V.38b

Ø  Through or in Christ Jesus our Lord

Ø  List: death, life, angels, rulers, present things, future things, powers, height, depth, or any other thing that was created

4.    CONCLUSION: ROMANS 8:31

Ø  If God be for us, who (or what) can be against us?

Ø  Answer: nothing and no one counts or can keep us from God

WE WIN!

STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 37

MORE THAN CONQUERORS!

Romans 8:33-37 (KJV)

33 Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

Romans 8:33-37 (CEB)

33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect people? It is God who acquits them. 34 Who is going to convict them? It is Christ Jesus who died, even more, who was raised, and who also is at God’s right side. It is Christ Jesus who also pleads our case for us. 35 Who will separate us from Christ’s love? Will we be separated by trouble, or distress, or harassment, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, We are being put to death all day long for your sake. We are treated like sheep for slaughter.[a] 37 But in all these things we win a sweeping victory through the one who loved us.

Footnotes: Ps 44:22 - No, God, it’s because of you that we are getting killed every day—
it’s because of you that we are considered sheep ready for slaughter.

1.    3 QUESTIONS V.33-35

Ø  Who can charge us?  Who can condemn us?  Who can separate us?

Ø  Answer: NO ONE, because God acquits us, Christ intercedes for us and nothing and no one can separate us from Christ’s commitment to love us

2.    TARGETS V.36 & PS. 44:22

Ø  The Korahites complaint PS. 44 (read)

Ø  God’s answer: His love which sustains us through anything & everything

3.    MORE THAN CONQUERORS V. 37

Ø  We win a sweeping victory through the love of God

Ø  As we trust in God’s love, we have won even before the trouble comes

REMEMBER: WHATEVER COMES, GOD’S LOVE WILL GET US THROUGH IT VICTORIOUSLY!

EVERYTHING IS OURS!

STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 36

EVERYTHING IS OURS!

Romans 8:31-32 (KJV)

31 What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

Romans 8:31-32 (CEB)

31 So what are we going to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He didn’t spare his own Son but gave him up for us all. Won’t he also freely give us all things with him?

  1. 2 Corinthians 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; 2 Corinthians 5:17-19 (in Context)
  2. 1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; 1 Timothy 6:16-18 (in Context)
  3. 2 Peter 1:3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

1.    GOD IS FOR US V.31

Ø  Therefore it doesn’t matter who tries to be against us – it won’t work!

2.    BASIS FOR BELIEF V. 32

Ø  Didn’t spare His own Son, but gave Him us for us all (Christ’s sacrifice & success is our basis for belief)

3.    ALL THINGS ARE OF GOD & HE GIVES THEM TO US V. 32b

Ø  See above ref.: 2 Cor. 5:18, 1 Tim. 6:17, 2 Pet. 1:3

Ø  There is NO limit to the things God has provided for us

Ø  Especially those things that have to do with life and godliness

LET US ENJOY THE THINGS GOD HAS PROVIDED AND DEMONSTRATE HIS GREAT LOVE FOR US THROUGH THEM WITH LIBERALITY TO OTHERS.
