STUDIES IN 1 JOHN

LESSON 7

THE WORLD & ANTICHRISTS

1 John 2:15-18 (KJV)

15Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever. 18Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

1 John 2:15-18 (AMP)

15Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. 16For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one's own resources or in the stability of earthly things]--these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]. 17And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever. 18[a]Boys (lads), it is the last time (hour, the end of this age). And as you have heard that the antichrist [he who will oppose Christ in the guise of Christ] is coming, even now many antichrists have arisen, which confirms our belief that it is the final (the end) time.

1.    LOVE NOT THE WORLD vs.15-17

Ø  Nor the things that are in the world

Ø  If any man love the world – God’s love is not in him

Ø  Lust of the flesh – craving for sensual gratification (AMP)

Ø  Lust of the eyes – greedy longings of the mind (AMP)

2.    THE END TIME AND ANTICHRIST vs. 18

Ø  Little children – youth, warning especially to these as they will be faced with the power of the world and its lust along with the tempter

Ø  Antichrist (see AMP)

Ø  Many antichrists – now in the world

Ø  WE ARE IN THE LAST TIME

DO NOT BE TRAPPED.  RECOGNIZE AND SHUN LUST AND THE ANTICHRIST SPIRIT.

LESSON 6

COMMENDATIONS FOR PROGRESS IN CHRIST

1 John 2:12-14 (KJV)

12I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake. 13I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father. 14I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.

1 John 2:12-14 (AMP)

12I am writing to you, little children, because for His name's sake your sins are forgiven [pardoned through His name and on account of confessing His name].13I am writing to you, fathers, because you have come to know (recognize, be aware of, and understand) Him Who [has existed] from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have been victorious over the wicked [one]. I write to you, [a]boys (lads), because you have come to know (recognize and be aware) of the Father.14I write to you, fathers, because you have come to know (recognize, be conscious of, and understand) Him Who [has existed] from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong and vigorous, and the Word of God is [always] abiding in you (in your hearts), and you have been victorious over the wicked one.

1.   “I WRITE UNTO YOU…”

·         Little children – sins forgiven

·         Fathers – you have known Him

·         Young men – have overcome the wicked one

2.   “I HAVE WRITTEN UNTO YOU…”

·         Little children – you have known the Father

·         Fathers – because you have known Him that is from the beginning

·         Young men – you are strong, God’s Word lives in you, you are overcomers

WE MUST LIVE IN THE CONFIDENCE OF OUR SALVATION, KNOWING HIM AND LETTING HIS WORD LIVE IN US WHILE OVERCOMING THE EVIL ONE.

LESSON 5

ON HATING YOUR BROTHER

1 John 2:8-11 (KJV)

8Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. 9He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now. 10He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. 11But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.

1 John 2:8-11 (AMP)

8Yet I am writing you a new commandment, which is true (is realized) in Him and in you, because the darkness ([a]moral blindness) is clearing away and the true Light ([b]the revelation of God in Christ) is already shining. 9Whoever says he is in the Light and [yet] hates his brother [Christian, [c]born-again child of God his Father] is in darkness even until now. 10Whoever loves his brother [believer] abides (lives) in the Light, and in It or in him there is no occasion for stumbling or cause for error or sin. 11But he who hates (detests, despises) his brother [[d]in Christ] is in darkness and walking (living) in the dark; he is straying and does not perceive or know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

1.    A NEW COMMANDMENT v.8

v  In v. 7 John claims he is not writing a “new commandment” yet in v.8 he says he is; no contradiction here, just renewing the old and refining it’s meaning in Christ

v  He says this is true in Him and in us (we know this by the Spirit & the Word)

v  We see evidence that the darkness is leaving & the light is appearing

2.    CLARIFICATION & UNDERSTANDING v.9

v  This applies not only to family but to Christian relationships as well

v  If we “say” we are in the Light but hate a person in relationship with us, we are in darkness and the Light of Christ is not in us

3.    LOVE IS THE KEY v.10

v  Whoever loves lives in the Light

v  there is no occasion for stumbling or cause for error or sin”

4.    WARNING ADDED FOR EMPHASIS v.11

v  Anyone who hates his brother (applies to all – no reason or excuse)

v  Is in darkness – walking & living in the dark

v  Straying – not perceiving or understanding where he is going

v  Because darkness has blinded his eyes

WALK IN THE LIGHT AS CHRIST DOES AND THERE IS NO ROOM FOR DARKNESS.
