STUDIES IN ROMANS
LESSON 74

PAUL’S MINISTRY TO THE GENTILES

Romans 15:13-16 (KJV)

13 Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. 14 And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. 15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God, 16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.

Romans 15:13-16 (CEB)

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. 14 My brothers and sisters, I myself am convinced that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and are able to teach each other. 15 But I’ve written to you in a sort of daring way, partly to remind you of what you already know. I’m writing to you in this way because of the grace that was given to me by God. 16 It helps me to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I’m working as a priest of God’s gospel so that the offering of the Gentiles can be acceptable and made holy by the Holy Spirit.

STUDIES IN ROMANS
LESSON 73

HOPE FOR THE GENTILES TOO!

Romans 15:5-12 (KJV)

Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus: That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore receive ye one another, as Christ also received us to the glory of God. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers: And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name. 10 And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people. 11 And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people. 12 And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.

Romans 15:5-12 (CEB)

May the God of endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude toward each other, similar to Christ Jesus’ attitude. That way you can glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ together with one voice. So welcome each other, in the same way that Christ also welcomed you, for God’s glory. I’m saying that Christ became a servant of those who are circumcised for the sake of God’s truth, in order to confirm the promises given to the ancestors, and so that the Gentiles could glorify God for his mercy. As it is written, Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name.[a] 10 And again, it says, Rejoice, Gentiles, with his people.[b] 11 And again, Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and all the people should sing his praises.[c] 12 And again, Isaiah says, There will be a root of Jesse, who will also rise to rule the Gentiles. The Gentiles will place their hope in him.[d]

1.    BE LIKEMINDED (SAME ATTITUDE) V. 5

2.    GLORIFY GOD V. 6-7

3.    JESUS – MINISTER TO JEWS V. 8

4.    JESUS – MINISTER TO GENTILES (NON JEWISH) V. 9-12

Ø  Ps 18:49 - I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name.

Ø  Deut 32:43 - Rejoice, Gentiles, with his people.

Ø  Ps 117:1 - Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles, and all the people should sing his praises

Ø   Isa 11:10 - Isaiah says, There will be a root of Jesse, who will also rise to rule the Gentiles. The Gentiles will place their hope in him.

WE (GENTILES) HAVE OUR HOPE IN CHRIST AS SHOULD THE JEWS.

STUDIES IN ROMANS
LESSON 72

HOW TO BUILD HOPE

Romans 15:1-4 (KJV)

15 We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbor for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Romans 15:1-4 (CEB)

15 We who are powerful need to be patient with the weakness of those who don’t have power, and not please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good in order to build them up. Christ didn’t please himself, but, as it is written, The insults of those who insulted you fell on me.[a] Whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction so that we could have hope through endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures.

1.    STRONG & WEAK V. 1

Ø  Strong in faith and action

Ø  Weak in faith and action

Ø  Strong build up weak – not put them down – as the world does

2.    EDIFICATION (BUILDING UP) V. 2

3.    CHRIST PLEASED NOT HIMSELF (PS. 69:9) V. 3

4.    SO WE COULD HAVE HOPE V. 4

Ø  Scriptures were written to bring hope – read & follow them

Ø  Scriptures were written for our instruction & encouragement

Ø  Endurance (hang in there) will be rewarded with hope

FOOTNOTE

Psalm 69:9 (CEB)

Because passion for your house has consumed me,
the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me!

OUR DUTY AND PURPOSE IS TO BRING HOPE!

STUDIES IN ROMANS
LESSON 71

THE CONCLUSION OF THIS MATTER

Romans 14:19-23 (KJV)

19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. 20 For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. 21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. 22 Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. 23 And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.

Romans 14:19-23 (CEB)

19 So let’s strive for the things that bring peace and the things that build each other up. 20 Don’t destroy what God has done because of food. All food is acceptable, but it’s a bad thing if it trips someone else. 21 It’s a good thing not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything that trips your brother or sister. 22 Keep the belief that you have to yourself—it’s between you and God. People are blessed who don’t convict themselves by the things they approve.23 But those who have doubts are convicted if they go ahead and eat, because they aren’t acting on the basis of faith. Everything that isn’t based on faith is sin.

1.    DO EVERYTHING TO MAKE PEACE AND EDIFY V. 19

2.    ALL THINGS (IN THEMSELVES) ARE PURE [DISCOUNTING THINGS EVIL] V. 20

3.    DON’T DO THINGS TO TRIP OTHERS V. 21

4.    YOUR FAITH IS BETWEEN GOD AND YOU—DON’T APPROVE WHAT YOU DON’T BELIEVE – THAT BRINGS CONDEMNATION V. 22-23A

5.    WHATEVER IS NOT OF FAITH IS SIN V. 23B

STUDIES IN ROMANS
LESSON 70

STUMBLING BLOCKS

Romans 14:14-19 (KJV)

14 I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. 15 But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died. 16 Let not then your good be evil spoken of: 17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. 18 For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. 19 Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

Romans 14:14-19 (CEB)

14 I know and I’m convinced in the Lord Jesus that nothing is wrong to eat in itself. But if someone thinks something is wrong to eat, it becomes wrong for that person. 15 If your brother or sister is upset by your food, you are no longer walking in love. Don’t let your food destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16 And don’t let something you consider to be good be criticized as wrong. 17 God’s kingdom isn’t about eating food and drinking but about righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.18 Whoever serves Christ this way pleases God and gets human approval. 19 So let’s strive for the things that bring peace and the things that build each other up.

1.    NOTHING UNCLEAN OF ITSELF V. 14

Ø  If one thinks something is unclean, to him it is unclean

Ø  If your brother is offended by your freedom don’t let your freedom destroy him

2.    DON’T DESTROY BY EATING OR NOT EATING V. 15-16

3.    KINGDOM OF GOD = RIGHTEOUSNESS, PEACE & JOY IN THE HOLY GHOST V. 17

4.    SERVING CHRIST & GAINING APPROVAL OF MEN V. 18

5.    STRIVE TO DO THE THINGS THAT BRING PEACE AND EDIFY V. 19
