STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 43

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

Romans 9:25-28 (KJV)

25 As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved. 26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God. 27 Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved: 28 For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

Romans 9:25-28 (CEB)

25 As it says also in Hosea, I will call “my people” those who aren’t my people,
and the one who isn’t well loved, I will call “loved one.”[
a] 26 And in the place where it was said to them, “You aren’t my people,    there they will be called “the living God’s children.”[b] 27 But Isaiah cries out for Israel, Though the number of Israel’s children will be like the sand of the sea, only a remaining part will be saved,28 because the Lord does what he says completely and quickly.[c]

1.    I (GOD) WILL CALL THEM ‘MY PEOPLE’ V.25-26

Ø  Speaking of the Gentiles – this is OUR hope for the future!

2.    A REMNANT SHALL BE SAVED [OF ISRAEL] V.27-28

Ø  Speaking of the Jewish nation – this is their hope for the future

FOOTNOTES

Hosea 2:23 (CEB)

23 I will sow him for myself in the land; and I will have compassion on No Compassion,
and I will say to Not My People, “You are my people”; and he will say, “You are my God.”

Hosea 1:10 (CEB)

10 [a] Yet the number of the people of Israel will be like the sand of the sea, which can be neither measured nor numbered; and in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it will be said to them, “Children of the living God.”

Isaiah 10:22 (CEB)

22 Although your people, Israel, were like the sand of the sea, only a few survivors will return. The end is announced, overflowing with justice.

LESSON 42

IS GOD UNJUST? (CONTINUED)

Romans 9:17-24 (KJV)

17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth. 19 Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? 20 Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? 21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour? 22 What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction: 23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory, 24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

Romans 9:17-24 (CEB)

17 Scripture says to Pharaoh, I have put you in this position for this very thing: so I can show my power in you and so that my name can be spread through the entire earth.[a] 18 So then, God has mercy on whomever he wants to, but he makes resistant whomever he wants to. 19 So you are going to say to me, “Then why does he still blame people? Who has ever resisted his will?” 20 You are only a human being. Who do you think you are to talk back to God? Does the clay say to the potter,Why did you make me like this?[b] 21 Doesn’t the potter have the power over the clay to make one pot for special purposes and another for garbage from the same lump of clay? 22 What if God very patiently puts up with pots made for wrath that were designed for destruction, because he wanted to show his wrath and to make his power known? 23 What if he did this to make the wealth of his glory known toward pots made for mercy, which he prepared in advance for glory? 24 We are the ones God has called. We don’t come only from the Jews but we also come from the Gentiles.

1.    PHARAOH V.17-20

Ø  Put in position to show the power & mercy of God

2.    POTTER V.21-22

Ø  Example: to explain how & why God does things this way

3.    POWER V.23-24

Ø  What His power & mercy accomplish

GOD IS BOTH JUST AND IN CONTROL FOR BELIEVERS’ BENEFIT.

FOOTNOTES

Exodus 9:16 (CEB)

16 But I’ve left you standing for this reason: in order to show you my power and in order to make my name known in the whole world.

Isaiah 29:16 (CEB)

16 You have everything backward! Should the potter be thought of as clay? Should what is made say of its maker, “He didn’t make me”? Should what is shaped say of the one who shaped it, “He doesn’t understand”?

Isaiah 45:9 (CEB)

Doom to the one who argues with the potter as if he were just another clay pot!
Does the clay say to the potter, “What are you making?” or “Your work has no handles”

LESSON 41

IS GOD UNJUST?

Romans 9:10-16 (KJV)

10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; 11 (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) 12 It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. 13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. 14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid. 15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

Romans 9:10-16 (CEB)

10 Not only that, but also Rebecca conceived children with one man, our ancestor Isaac. 11 When they hadn’t been born yet and when they hadn’t yet done anything good or bad, it was shown that God’s purpose would continue because it was based on his choice. 12 It wasn’t because of what was done but because of God’s call. This was said to her: The older child will be a slave to the younger one.[a] 13 As it is written, I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau.[b] 14 So what are we going to say? Isn’t this unfair on God’s part? Absolutely not! 15 He says to Moses, I’ll have mercy on whomever I choose to have mercy, and I’ll show compassion to whomever I choose to show compassion.[c] 16 So then, it doesn’t depend on a person’s desire or effort. It depends entirely on God, who shows mercy.

1.   APPEARANCE OF PARADOX V.10-16

Ø  Up to now Paul has presented the beauty & power of God’s provision of salvation, not based upon works, but rather faith

Ø  Now he presents a seeming paradox – God’s choice seems to violate man’s free will and choice; ergo: Jacob & Esau (see footnote [a]-[c])

Ø  God (knowing our hearts & minds from beginning to end of our lives) chose special roles for each to further His plan of salvation based on choices He knew we would make, thus extending mercy to those who call upon Him

BECAUSE GOD KNEW WE WOULD CHOOSE HIM, HE CHOSE US.

FOOTNOTES:

[a] Genesis 25:23 (CEB) 23 And the Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb;
two different peoples will emerge from your body. One people will be stronger than the other; the older will serve the younger.”

[b] Malachi 1:2 (CEB) I have loved you, says the Lord; but you say, “How have you loved us?” Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother? says the Lord.

[c] Exodus 33:19 (CEB) 19 The Lord said, “I’ll make all my goodness pass in front of you, and I’ll proclaim before you the name, ‘The Lord.’ I will be kind to whomever I wish to be kind, and I will have compassion to whomever I wish to be compassionate.

STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 40

ISRAEL AND GOD’S CHOICE

Romans 9:6-9 (KJV)

6 Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: 7 Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. 8 That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.

Romans 9:6-9 (CEB)

6 But it’s not as though God’s word has failed. Not all who are descended from Israel are part of Israel. 7 Not all of Abraham’s children are called Abraham’s descendants, but instead your descendants will be named through Isaac.[a] 8 That means it isn’t the natural children who are God’s children, but it is the children from the promise who are counted as descendants. 9 The words in the promise were: A year from now I will return, and Sarah will have a son.[b]

1.    GOD’S WORD DOES NOT FAIL V.6a

Ø  Just because some do not follow God’s word doesn’t mean it failed – they did

2.    ABRAHAM’ SONS – NOT ALL ARE ISRAELITES V.6b-8a

Genesis 21:12 (CEB) 12 God said to Abraham, “Don’t be upset about the boy and your servant. Do everything Sarah tells you to do because your descendants will be traced through Isaac.

Ø  Ishmael and his descendants are from Abraham’s fleshly choice – not God’s

3.    CHILDREN OF THE PROMISE (FAITH) = TRUE ISRAELITES V.8b

Ø  These are TRUE Israelites and we are included because it’s by FAITH

4.    REASON – GOD SET THE RULES V.9

Genesis 18:10 (CEB) 10 Then one of the men said, “I will definitely return to you about this time next year. Then your wife Sarah will have a son!” Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. Galatians 3:7,29 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham 29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

WE ARE PART OF THE PROMISE.  WE ARE SPIRITUAL ISRAEL, BY FAITH!
