LESSON 22

SIN, DEATH AND THE GIFT OF GOD

Romans 5:12-17 (KJV)

12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: 13 (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. 16 And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. 17 For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

Romans 5:12-17 (CEB)

12 So, in the same way that sin entered the world through one person, and death came through sin, so death spread to all human beings with the result that all sinned. 13 Although sin was in the world, since there was no Law, it wasn’t taken into account until the Law came. 14 But death ruled from Adam until Moses, even over those who didn’t sin in the same way Adam did—Adam was a type of the one who was coming.

15 But the free gift of Christ isn’t like Adam’s failure. If many people died through what one person did wrong, God’s grace is multiplied even more for many people with the gift—of the one person Jesus Christ—that comes through grace. 16 The gift isn’t like the consequences of one person’s sin. The judgment that came from one person’s sin led to punishment, but the free gift that came out of many failures led to the verdict of acquittal. 17 If death ruled because of one person’s failure, those who receive the multiplied grace and the gift of righteousness will even more certainly rule in life through the one person Jesus Christ.

1.    ONE MAN, ONE SIN = DEATH ON ALL v 12-14

Ø  Adam had on command, failed and brought death on all men

Ø  Even though there was no ‘law’ death reigned because of Adam

Ø  The free gift (salvation) comes for all but is a matter of personal choice

Ø  Adam was a type of Christ, but failed; Christ replaced him – 2nd Adam

2.    ONE MAN, ONE SACRIFICE = ETERNAL LIFE FOR ALL v 15-17

Ø  Free gift not like Adam’s failure

Ø  Through Adam all die; through Jesus Christ all can live – by faith

Ø  1 sin = many die; 1 sacrifice = many live; through acquittal

Ø  Now the gift of righteousness reigns more certainly than expected death

AS YOU BELIEVE, WALK IN CONFIDENCE, SALVATION IS MORE SURE THAN DEATH.

LESSON 21

RECONCILED TO POSITION IN CHRIST

Romans 5:6-11 (KJV)

6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. 10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. 11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Romans 5:6-11 (CEB)

6 While we were still weak, at the right moment, Christ died for ungodly people. 7 It isn’t often that someone will die for a righteous person, though maybe someone might dare to die for a good person. 8 But God shows his love for us, because while we were still sinners Christ died for us. 9 So, now that we have been made righteous by his blood, we can be even more certain that we will be saved from God’s wrath through him. 10 If we were reconciled to God through the death of his Son while we were still enemies, now that we have been reconciled, how much more certain is it that we will be saved by his life? 11 And not only that: we even take pride in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, the one through whom we now have a restored relationship with God.

1.    IN DUE TIME v 6-8

Ø  Christ died for the ungodly

Ø  Barely possible a man would die for either a righteous or good man

Ø  While we were yet sinners – Christ died for us

2.    NOW JUSTIFIED v 9-10

Ø  Been made righteous – right before God

Ø  By His blood

Ø  More certain we will be saved from God’s wrath

Ø  If this happened while we were enemies of God, more certain we will be saved now that we are friends of God through Christ

3.    WE JOY IN GOD v 11

Ø  Not just saved, but full of joy because of it

Ø  Take pride in being in this position with God

Ø  We have received the atonement – some say “at-one-ment” or one with God

LET US REJOICE IN OUR SALVATION WITH ASSURANCE IT IS GOOD FOR ETERNITY.

LESSON 20

ACCESS BY FAITH INTO GRACE (FAVOR)

Romans 5:1-5 (KJV)

5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 5:1-5 (CEB)

5 Therefore, since we have been made righteous through his faithfulness[a] combined with our faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 We have access by faith into this grace in which we stand through him, and we boast in the hope of God’s glory. 3 But not only that! We even take pride in our problems, because we know that trouble produces endurance, 4 endurance produces character, and character produces hope. 5 This hope doesn’t put us to shame, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

1.    POSITION v.1

Ø  Justified by faith (made righteous – CEB)

Ø  Have peace with God

Ø  Through our Lord Jesus Christ

2.    PERSON v.2

Ø  Access is through Jesus

Ø  Into grace or the favor of God

Ø  In which we stand (take up firm residence)

Ø  Through Jesus

Ø  Glory (boast) in hope of achieving God’s glory (our portion)

3.    PROCESS v.3-4

Ø  Glory in tribulation (count it advantageous)

Ø  Tribulation (trouble) produces endurance (patience)

Ø  Patience produces experience (character)

Ø  Experience produces hope

4.    PRODUCT v.5

Ø  This hope doesn’t put us to shame (as if it could fail)

Ø  Why? Because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts

Ø  Through the Holy Spirit

Ø  Who has been given to us (made available and advised to be received)

LET US STAND IN GOD’S FAVOR PATIENTLY WITH HOPE, IN LOVE BY THE HOLY SPIRIT BECAUSE OF WHAT JESUS HAS DONE FOR US.

LESSON 19

FAITH = THE PROMISE – PART 4

Romans 4:23-25 (KJV)

23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Romans 4:23-25 (AMP)

23 But [the words], It was credited to him, were written not for his sake alone, 24 But [they were written] for our sakes too. [Righteousness, standing acceptable to God] will be granted and credited to us also who believe in (trust in, adhere to, and rely on) God, Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 Who was betrayed and put to death because of our misdeeds and was raised to secure our justification (our [a]acquittal), [making our account balance and absolving us from all guilt before God].

Romans 4:23-25 (CEB)

23 But the scripture that says it was credited to him[a] wasn’t written only for Abraham’s sake. 24 It was written also for our sake, because it is going to be credited to us too. It will be credited to those of us who have faith in the one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead. 25 He was handed over because of our mistakes, and he was raised to meet the requirements of righteousness for us.

1.    NOT WRITTEN FOR ABRAHAM ALONE v.23

Ø  Righteousness imputed (credited)

2.    BUT FOR US ALSO v.24

Ø  Will be credited to us also

Ø  Who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead

3.    WHAT HAPPENED TO JESUS v.25

Ø  Betrayed and put to death because of our misdeeds (AMP) mistakes (CEB)

Ø  Raised to meet the requirements of righteousness for us (CEB)

Ø  Was raised to secure our justification (our acquittal), making our account balance and absolving us from all guilt before God
