LESSON 13

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT –JEWS/GENTILES (PART 8)

Romans 3:21-26 (KJV)

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: 23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; 26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Romans 3:21-26 (CEB)

21 But now God’s righteousness has been revealed apart from the Law, which is confirmed by the Law and the Prophets. 22 God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction. 23 All have sinned and fall short of God’s glory, 24 but all are treated as righteous freely by his grace because of a ransom that was paid by Christ Jesus. 25 Through his faithfulness, God displayed Jesus as the place of sacrifice where mercy is found by means of his blood. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness in passing over sins that happened before, 26 during the time of God’s patient tolerance. He also did this to demonstrate that he is righteous in the present time, and to treat the one who has faith in Jesus as righteous.

1.    THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD v.21

Ø  Without the law – made clear; witnessed by the law & the prophets

2.    THE FAITH OF JESUS v.22

Ø  Righteousness of God comes by believing in Jesus

Ø  Comes on ALL who believe; There is NO difference

3.    ALL HAVE SINNED v.23

Ø  No one is exempt from sinning (except Christ); all fall short of God’s best

4.    JUSTIFIED FREELY v.24-26

Ø  All justified freely because of Christ’s ransom and through His grace

Ø  Propitiation = ‘the place of sacrifice where mercy is found’ CEB

Ø  Taking away all sins of the past (note: all our sins were future at the cross)

Ø  Demonstrates that God is righteous, now, & treats us as righteous thru Christ

REJOICE!  OUR SINS ARE REPLACED WITH HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS!

LESSON 12

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT –JEWS/GENTILES (PART 7)

Romans 3:9-20 (KJV)

9 What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin; 10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.  12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.  13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: 14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: 15 Their feet are swift to shed blood: 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways: 17 And the way of peace have they not known: 18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.  19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.  20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Romans 3:9-20 (CEB)

9 So what are we saying? Are we better off? Not at all. We have already stated the charge: both Jews and Greeks are all under the power of sin. 10 As it is written, There is no righteous person, not even one. 11 There is no one who understands. There is no one who looks for God. 12 They all turned away. They have become worthless together. There is no one who shows kindness. There is not even one. 13 Their throat is a grave that has been opened.
They are deceitful with their tongues, and the poison of vipers is under their lips. 14 Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness. 15 Their feet are quick to shed blood; 16 destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 and they don’t know the way of peace. 18 There is no fear of God in their view of the world. 19 Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, in order to shut every mouth and make it so the whole world has to answer to God. 20 It follows that no human being will be treated as righteous in his presence by doing what the Law says, because the knowledge of sin comes through the Law.

1.    ALL UNDER SIN v.9

2.    THE ‘NONE’S’ v.10-16

Ø  None righteous, none that understands, none that seek God, none profitable, none that does good, none that fears God (v.18)

3.    NO PEACE v.17-18

4.    UNDER THE LAW v.19-20

Ø  The law does not bring us to righteousness

Ø  Rather it shows us sin and as sinners

THE MOSAIC LAW SHOWS OUR SIN, THE LAW OF CHRIST SETS US FREE.

LESSON 11

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT –JEWS/GENTILES (PART 6)

Romans 3  (KJV)

3 What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?  2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.  3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?  4 God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged.  5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance? (I speak as a man) 6 God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world?  7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner?  8 And not rather, (as we be slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just.

Romans 3  (CEB)

God’s faithfulness and justice

3 So what’s the advantage of being a Jew? Or what’s the benefit of circumcision? 2 Plenty in every way. First of all, the Jews were trusted with God’s revelations. 3 What does it matter, then, if some weren’t faithful? Their lack of faith won’t cancel God’s faithfulness, will it? 4 Absolutely not! God must be true, even if every human being is a liar, as it is written:  So that it can show that you are right in your words; and you will triumph when you are judged.  5 But if our lack of righteousness confirms God’s justice, what will we say? That God, who brings wrath upon us, isn’t just (I’m speaking rhetorically)? 6 Absolutely not! If God weren’t just, how could he judge the world? 7 But if God’s truth is demonstrated by my lie and it increases his glory, why am I still judged as a sinner? 8 Why not say, “Let’s do evil things so that good things will come out of it”? (Some people who slander us accuse us of saying that, but these people deserve criticism.)

1.    WHAT ADVANTAGE IS IT BEING A JEW? V.1-2

Ø  What profit in circumcision?

Ø  Much in every way, first: Jews trusted with God’s revelations

2.    WHAT IF SOME DID NOT BELIEVE? V.3

Ø  Their lack of faith won’t cancel God’s faithfulness

3.    LET GOD BE TRUE, BUT EVERY MAN A LIAR v.4

Ø  God is justified when people judge him (because He is true)

4.    DOES ‘BAD’ = ‘GOOD’? v.5-7

Ø  If our ‘bad’ = showing God’s goodness, would that make our ‘badness’ good?

Ø  Absolutely not!

Ø  If God’s truth is shown by my lie and He is shown to be more glorious because of that, why am I judged as a sinner?

Ø   “Let’s do evil things so that good things will come out of it”?

LIVING RIGHT BRINGS GOD MORE GLORY, SO LIVE RIGHT.

LESSON 10

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT –JEWS/GENTILES (PART 5)

Romans 2:26-29 (KJV)

26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?  27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfill the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?  28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: 29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Romans 2:26-29 (CEB)

26 So if the person who isn’t circumcised keeps the Law, won’t his status of not being circumcised be counted as if he were circumcised? 27 The one who isn’t physically circumcised but keeps the Law will judge you. You became a lawbreaker after you had the written Law and circumcision. 28 It isn’t the Jew who maintains outward appearances who will receive praise from God, and it isn’t people who are outwardly circumcised on their bodies. 29 Instead, it is the person who is a Jew inside, who is circumcised in spirit, not literally. That person’s praise doesn’t come from people but from God.

1.    PROPOSAL #1 v.26

Ø  Not circumcised but a keeper of the Law = circumcision, ergo: righteous

2.    PROPOSAL #2 v.27

Ø  Law abiding Gentiles judge law breaking Jews

3.    FACT #1 v.28

Ø  Not a Jew which is one outwardly – circumcision doesn’t count

Ø  No praise from God

4.    FACT #2 v.29

Ø  Real Jew = inward, circumcision of the spirit

Ø  God praises this life

PROPOSAL #3 – LIVE SO YOU RECEIVE THE PRAISE OF GOD!

LESSON 9

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT – THE JEWS (PART 4)

Romans 2:17-25 (KJV)

17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, 18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; 19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, 20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.  21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?  22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?  23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?  24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.  25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

Romans 2:17-25 (CEB)

17 But, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the Law; if you brag about your relationship to God; 18 if you know the will of God; if you are taught by the Law so that you can figure out the things that really matter; 19 if you have persuaded yourself that you are:
a guide for the blind; a light to those who are in darkness; 20 an educator of the foolish;
a teacher of infants (since you have the full content of knowledge and truth in the Law);
21 then why don’t you who are teaching others teach yourself?  If you preach, “No stealing,” do you steal?  22 If you say, “No adultery,” do you commit adultery?  If you hate idols, do you rob temples?  23 If you brag about the Law, do you shame God by breaking the Law? 24 As it is written: The name of God is discredited by the Gentiles because of you.  25 Circumcision is an advantage if you do what the Law says. But if you are a person who breaks the Law, your status of being circumcised has changed into not being circumcised.

1.    BASIS FOR THE JUDGMENT FOR THE JEWS v.17-20

Ø  Rest – have confidence in their position in the Law

Ø  Boast, know His will, approve the excellent, instructed out of the Law

2.    DON’T DO WHAT THEY SAY v.21-23

Ø  Teach but don’t learn; preach but don’t do; set moral standards – don’t do

Ø  Dishonor God by their life

3.    GOD DISCREDITED BY THE GENTILES BECAUSE OF JEWS LIVES v.24

4.    CIRCUMCISION: PROFIT/NON-PROFIT v.25

BELIEVE AND LIVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE OR BE JUDGED FOR HYPOCRISY.

LESSON 8

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT (PART 3)

Romans 2:12-16 (KJV)

12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; 13 (For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. 14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;) 16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Romans 2:12-16 (CEB)

12 Those who have sinned outside the Law will also die outside the Law, and those who have sinned under the Law will be judged by the Law. 13 It isn’t the ones who hear the Law who are righteous in God’s eyes. It is the ones who do what the Law says who will be treated as righteous. 14 Gentiles don’t have the Law. But when they instinctively do what the Law requires they are a Law in themselves, though they don’t have the Law. 15 They show the proof of the Law written on their hearts, and their consciences affirm it. Their conflicting thoughts will accuse them, or even make a defense for them, 16 on the day when, according to my gospel, God will judge the hidden truth about human beings through Christ Jesus.

1.    TWO MEASUREMENTS v.12-16

Ø  Measure #1:  outside the Law of Moses

Ø  Measure #2:  inside the Law of Moses

2.    DOERS NOT HEARERS v.13

Ø  Conscience is their judge

4.    GOD WILL JUDGE THE HIDDEN (SECRET) THINGS v.16

Ø  The hidden truth about human beings

Ø  Judged (measured) through and by Christ Jesus

5.    PAUL’S GOSPEL v.16

Ø  This is what Paul teaches everywhere – not just to the Romans

Ø  This is the truth as he sees it and it is affirmed by the Holy Ghost

UNDERSTAND THAT GOD JUDGES ACCORDING TO WHAT WE KNOW AS WELL AS WHAT WE DO!

LESSON 7

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT (PART 2)

Romans 2:5-11 (KJV)

5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: 8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

Romans 2:5-11 (DARBY)

5 but, according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up to thyself wrath, in [the] day of wrath and revelation of [the] righteous judgment of God, 6 who shall render to each according to his works: 7 to them who, in patient continuance of good works, seek for glory and honour and incorruptibility, life eternal.  8 But to those that are contentious, and are disobedient to the truth, but obey unrighteousness, [there shall be] wrath and indignation, 9 tribulation and distress, on every soul of man that works evil, both of Jew first, and of Greek; 10 but glory and honour and peace to everyone that works good, both to Jew first and to Greek: 11 for there is no acceptance of persons with God.

6.    NO RESPECT OF PERSONS WITH GOD v.11

Ø  As far as eternal life or death is concerned, God doesn’t play favorites

Ø  As far as righteous living is concerned, God has an additional reward system

LESSON 6

GOD’S PRINCIPLES OF JUDGMENT (PART 1)

Romans 2:1-4  (KJV)

2 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.  2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.  3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?  4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

Romans 2:1-4 (CEB)

Jews are without excuse

2 So every single one of you who judge others is without any excuse. You condemn yourself when you judge another person because the one who is judging is doing the same things. 2 We know that God’s judgment agrees with the truth, and his judgment is against those who do these kinds of things. 3 If you judge those who do these kinds of things while you do the same things yourself, think about this: Do you believe that you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you have contempt for the riches of God’s generosity, tolerance, and patience? Don’t you realize that God’s kindness is supposed to lead you to change your heart and life?

1.   PAUL’S WARNING v.1

Ø  Judges get judged

2.   GOD’S MEASUREMENT v.2

Ø  The truth

3.   GOD’S JUSTICE v.3

Ø  Doers of wrong will be brought to justice –NO exceptions

4.   GOD’S DELIVERANCE AVAILABLE v.4

Ø  Don’t live in contempt of others while doing the same things

Ø  God’s goodness should lead you to repentance – heart & life change

IF YOU FIND YOURSELF JUDGING OTHERS – REPENT!
