STUDIES IN ROMANS

LESSON 23

OBEDIENCE CANCELS DISOBEDIENCE

Romans 5:18-21 (KJV)

18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. 19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. 20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: 21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 5:18-21 (CEB)

18 So now the righteous requirements necessary for life are met for everyone through the righteous act of one person, just as judgment fell on everyone through the failure of one person. 19 Many people were made righteous through the obedience of one person, just as many people were made sinners through the disobedience of one person. 20 The Law stepped in to amplify the failure, but where sin increased, grace multiplied even more. 21 The result is that grace will rule through God’s righteousness, leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, just as sin ruled in death.

1.    THE CONTRAST - GOOD VS. EVIL v.18

Ø  Offence = judgment

Ø  Righteousness = free gift (justification)

2.    OPPOSITE DEEDS = OPPOSITE RESULTS v.19

Ø  Disobedience = sinners

Ø  Obedience = righteous persons

3.    LAW & GRACE v.20

Ø  Law = amplify the failure

Ø  Grace = amplifies redemption

4.    RESULT OF CHOOSING GRACE v.21

Ø  Grace (God’s favor) rules through God’s righteousness

Ø  Grace leads to eternal life – just as disobedience led to death

Ø  All this is through Jesus Christ our Lord
