LESSON 27

WAGES OR GIFT?

Romans 6:19-23 (KJV)

¹⁹ I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. ²⁰ For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. ²¹ What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. ²³ For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:19-23 (CEB)

¹⁹ (I’m speaking with ordinary metaphors because of your limitations.) Once, you offered the parts of your body to be used as slaves to impurity and to lawless behavior that leads to still more lawless behavior. Now, you should present the parts of your body as slaves to righteousness, which makes your lives holy. ²⁰ When you were slaves of sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. ²¹ What consequences did you get from doing things that you are now ashamed of? The outcome of those things is death. ²² But now that you have been set free from sin and become slaves to God, you have the consequence of a holy life, and the outcome is eternal life. ²³ The wages that sin pays are death, but God’s gift is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Ø  Flesh is not strong in spiritual things Tendency of flesh is to sin - sin leads to more sin

Ø  Change: do what leads to holiness

2.    POSITION BEFORE SALVATION v.20-21

Ø  Slaves of sin – free from righteousness – received shame and death

3.    BUT NOW THAT YOU ARE FREED FROM SIN v.22

Ø  Become servants of God, have a holy life and eternal life

4.    WAGES VERSES GIFT

Ø  Wages = death; Gift = eternal life
