STUDIES ON 1 PETER LESSON 14

STUDIES ON 1 PETER

LESSON 14

1 Peter 3:13-17 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Suffering for Doing Good

13 Now, who will want to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. So don’t worry or be afraid of their threats. 15 Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it. 16 But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ. 17 Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

1. WHY DO CHRISTIANS SUFFER?

• Who would want to harm you if you do good?

 Not good people

 Evil people, jealous people

 Satan

• One path to receiving rewards from God

2. RIGHT ATTITUDE DURING SUFFERING

• Don’t worry or be afraid

• Continue to worship Christ as Lord of your life

• Be ready to explain your Christian hope even in the trouble

• Keep your conscience clear

• Be gentle and respectful as you explain your hope

3. IF YOU ARE SPOKEN AGAINST

• They will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ

• Remember, it is better to suffer for doing good, if that is what God wants, than to suffer for doing wrong!

HOW WILL YOU FACE THE TROUBLE THAT COMES YOUR WAY – EVEN IF YOU DON’T DESERVE IT?

LESSON 13

1 Peter 3:8-12 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

All Christians

8 Finally, all of you should be of one mind. Sympathize with each other. Love each other as brothers and sisters. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. 9 Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it. 10 For the Scriptures say,

“If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.

11 Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.

12 The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right, and his ears are open to their prayers. But the Lord turns his face against those who do evil.”

1. ONE MIND

 Sympathize with each other (have compassion – KJV)

 Love as brothers & sisters

 Be tenderhearted

 Keep a humble attitude

 Don’t repay evil for evil

 Don’t retaliate

 Bless instead

 God called you to this & will bless you for doing these things

2. TO ENJOY LIFE

 Keep your tongue & lips from evil & lies

 Do good

 Search for peace & work to maintain it

 God’s attention is on you – carefully pause and consider this (Selah)

ALL CHRISTIANS SHOULD PRACTICE THESE THINGS AND EXCELL AT THEM!

LESSON 12

1 Peter 3:7 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Husbands

7 In the same way, you husbands must give honor to your wives. Treat your wife with understanding as you live together. She may be weaker than you are, but she is your equal partner in God’s gift of new life. Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.

1 Peter 3:7 [King James Version (KJV)]

7Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

1. IN THE SAME WAY

 There is no difference from the way husbands are to treat their wives than the way wives are to treat their husbands – in the Spirit of Christ!

Christians have a basic rule of conduct – Golden Rule Matthew 7:12

New Living Translation (NLT)

12 “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

2. GIVE

 Honor

 Understanding

 Equal

 Treat her as you should so your prayers will not be hindered.

Leviticus 19:18 New Living Translation (NLT)

“Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against a fellow Israelite, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

(APPLIES TO CHRISTIANS EVEN MORE SO)

LESSON 11

1 Peter 3:1-6 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Wives

1 In the same way, you wives must accept the authority of your husbands. Then, even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. They will be won over 2 by observing your pure and reverent lives. 3 Don’t be concerned about the outward beauty of fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes. 4 You should clothe yourselves instead with the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God. 5 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful. They trusted God and accepted the authority of their husbands. 6 For instance, Sarah obeyed her husband, Abraham, and called him her master. You are her daughters when you do what is right without fear of what your husbands might do.

1. IN THE SAME WAY

• Refers to chapter 2 – walking in His steps

• Speaks to two things

 Following Jesus

 Following your husband

2. ACCEPT THE AUTHORITY OF YOUR HUSBAND

• Reason: even if some refuse to obey the Good News, your godly lives will speak to them without any words. (unsaved husband)

• They will be won over by observing your pure and reverent lives.

3. CONDUCT

• Outward beauty – don’t be overly concerned with this, though you shouldn’t be careless in this

 Fancy hairstyles

 Expensive jewelry

 Beautiful clothes

• Inward beauty – be concerned with this

 Beauty that comes from within

 Unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit – precious to God

 This is how the holy women of old made themselves beautiful.

 They trusted God

 accepted the authority of their husbands

 example: Sarah

WHEN YOU OBEY GOD AND YOUR HUSBAND, YOU WILL NOT HAVE FEAR ABOUT WHAT YOUR HUSBAND MIGHT DO.

LESSON 10

1 Peter 2: 21-25 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

FOLLOWING IN HIS STEPS

21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.

22 He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone.

23 He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.

24 He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed.

25 Once you were like sheep who wandered away. But now you have turned to your Shepherd, the Guardian of your souls.

1. HIS ‘STEPS’

 Never sinned

 Never deceived anyone

 Did not retaliate

 Did not seek revenge or threaten it

 Left his case in the hands of God

 Personally carried our sins

 In his own body

 On the cross

 So we could be dead to sin

 So we could live for what is right

 By his wounds you are healed

2. USED TO BE LIKE WANDERING SHEEP

3. NOW TURNED BACK TO THE SHEPHERD – THE GUARDIAN OF YOUR SOULS

LET US FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS DOING WHAT HE DID TO THE BEST OF OUR ABILITY WITH HIS HELP!

LESSON 9

1 Peter 2:18-21 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Slaves

18 You who are slaves must accept the authority of your masters with all respect.[j] Do what they tell you—not only if they are kind and reasonable, but even if they are cruel. 19 For God is pleased with you when you do what you know is right and patiently endure unfair treatment. 20 Of course, you get no credit for being patient if you are beaten for doing wrong. But if you suffer for doing good and endure it patiently, God is pleased with you.

21 For God called you to do good, even if it means suffering, just as Christ suffered[k] for you. He is your example, and you must follow in his steps.

1. SLAVES?

 Those who are in servitude to another (paid or unpaid for those services)

 MUST accept the authority of your masters

 With all respect

 Do what they tell you

 Kind or cruel

2. PLEASING GOD

 When you do what you know is right

 When you patiently endure unfair treatment

 Doing wrong & getting punished – no credit

 Doing good and enduring punishment patiently – God is pleased with you

3. CALLED TO DO GOOD

 Even if it means suffering

 Christ suffered for you – he is your example

 Follow in his steps

WILL YOU FIGHT OR FOLLOW CHRIST WHEN WRONG IS DONE TO YOU?

LESSON 8

1 Peter 2:12-17 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Respecting People in Authority

13 For the Lord’s sake, respect all human authority—whether the king as head of state, 14 or the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish those who do wrong and to honor those who do right.

15 It is God’s will that your honorable lives should silence those ignorant people who make foolish accusations against you. 16 For you are free, yet you are God’s slaves, so don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do evil. 17 Respect everyone, and love your Christian brothers and sisters.[i] Fear God, and respect the king.

1. RESPECT ALL HUMAN AUTHORITY

Respect – esteem: a feeling or attitude of admiration or deference toward somebody or something

King – the leader of the country you are in

Officials – all levels

Right or wrong attention toward us

2. YOUR HONORABLE LIFE

What it should do for you

Free, yet slaves – don’t use freedom wrongly

3. PREMISE

Respect everyone: this is a choice on your part

love your Christian brothers and sisters

Fear God – sufficiently to show ultimate respect and because of who he is and what he can do

Respect (honor) the king – top authority in a country

YOU MUST PRACTICE RESPECT. IT DOES NOT COME NATURALLY OR EASILY, BUT IT IS COMMANDED BY GOD AND TAUGHT BY PARENTS. IT IS EXPECTED BY AUTHORITY AND PUNISHED FOR LACK OF IT.

STUDIES ON 1 PETER

LESSON 7

1 Peter 2:9-12 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

9 But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. 10 “Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy.”

11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. 12 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

1. YOU ARE A CHOSEN PEOPLE

 Royal priests

 Holy nation

 God’s very own possession

2. RESULT

 Can show others the goodness of God

 Out of darkness into light

 Once no identity – now the people of God

 Once no mercy –now received God’s mercy

3. CAUTION

 Temporary residents

 Keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls

 Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors

 Show honorable behavior

 Resulting in them giving honor to God when he judges the world

LET US SHOW OTHERS THE GOODNESS OF GOD SO THEY WILL DESIRE TO BECOME THE PEOPLE OF GOD WITH US.

LESSON 6

1 Peter 2:4-8 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Living Stones for God’s House

4 You are coming to Christ, who is the living cornerstone of God’s temple. He was rejected by people, but he was chosen by God for great honor. 5 And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests.[a] Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. 6 As the Scriptures say, “I am placing a cornerstone in Jerusalem,[b]

chosen for great honor, and anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.”

7 Yes, you who trust him recognize the honor God has given him. But for those who reject him, “The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone.” 8 And, “He is the stone that makes people stumble, the rock that makes them fall.” They stumble because they do not obey God’s word, and so they meet the fate that was planned for them.

1. THE LIVING CORNERSTONE

• Christ is THE cornerstone and he is alive!

• Rejected by people (those who chose not to believe God’s plan)

• Chosen by God for great honor & glory

2. BECOMING LIVING STONES

• We are living stones but are also growing stones

• God is building us into his spiritual temple

• As stones, we are also priests, serving Jesus and bringing our offerings of praise & thanksgiving

3. THE PURPOSE OF THE CORNERSTONE

• Everything else in the building starts with and relies on the cornerstone & it holds all together – never failing!

• We trust him and recognize his honor

• He who was rejected has become the cornerstone

• He is also the stone that sinners stumble and fall over

• They do this because they do not obey God’s word

• We do not stumble or fall because we trust in the Chief Cornerstone

BUILD YOUR “HOUSE” ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!

LESSON 5

1 Peter 2:1-3 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

1 So get rid of all evil behavior. Be done with all deceit, hypocrisy, jealousy, and all unkind speech. 2 Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment, 3 now that you have had a taste of the Lord’s kindness.

1 Peter 2:1-3 [King James Version]

1Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speaking,

2As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

3If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

1. GET RID OF THE ‘STUFF’

 KJV is more specific

 Not just ‘evil behavior – malice =” the intention or desire to cause harm or pain to somebody” [Encarta Dictionary]

 Guile: “a cunning, deceitful, or treacherous quality” [Encarta Dictionary]

 Hypocrisies: “the false claim to or pretense of having admirable principles, beliefs or feelings” [Encarta Dictionary]

 Envies: “the resentful or unhappy feeling of wanting somebody else’s success, good fortune, qualities or possessions” [Encarta Dictionary]

 All evil speaking [KJV]; unkind speech [NLT]

2. AS NEWBORN BABIES

 They announce their hunger – loudly!

 Won’t be put off – need it now!

 Can’t reason with them, to them it is life or death

3. HAVE YOU TASTED THAT THE LORD IS GRACIOUS?

 In reference to the sincere milk of the word, does it taste good?

 This is like ‘tasting the Lord’ – “try it you’ll like it!”

THIS IS PREPARATION FOR BECOMING A ‘LIVELY STONE’.

STUDIES ON 1 PETER LESSON 4

STUDIES ON 1 PETER

LESSON 4

1 Peter 1:21-25 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

21 Through Christ you have come to trust in God. And you have placed your faith and hope in God because he raised Christ from the dead and gave him great glory.

22 You were cleansed from your sins when you obeyed the truth, so now you must show sincere love to each other as brothers and sisters.[d] Love each other deeply with all your heart.[e]

23 For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living word of God. 24 As the Scriptures say,

“People are like grass;

their beauty is like a flower in the field.

The grass withers and the flower fades.

25 But the word of the Lord remains forever.”[f]

And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.

1. THROUGH CHRIST

 Trust in God

 Faith & hope through God’s action concerning Christ

 Raised Christ from the dead & gave him great glory

2. SINS REMOVED

 Because of obeying the truth

 Now show sincere love

 Echo – with all your heart

3. ETERNAL LIFE

 Due to being born again

 Source – the eternal, living word of God

 Scriptures say – people = grass/flowers: pass

 But the word of the Lord remains forever!

 Last line

REJOICE! YOUR SALVATION IS ETERNAL! STARTING FROM WHEN YOU FIRST BELIEVED!

8 You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. 9 The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

10 This salvation was something even the prophets wanted to know more about when they prophesied about this gracious salvation prepared for you. 11 They wondered what time or situation the Spirit of Christ within them was talking about when he told them in advance about Christ’s suffering and his great glory afterward.

12 They were told that their messages were not for themselves, but for you. And now this Good News has been announced to you by those who preached in the power of the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. It is all so wonderful that even the angels are eagerly watching these things happen.

1. The Unseen God

• Not seen but loved by you

• Not seen but trusted by you

• Status: rejoicing with a glorious, inexpressible joy

• Reward for this: salvation of your soul

2. Prophetic Puzzle

• Prophets didn’t understand this salvation but wanted to

• They wondered when, how, & who would bring it and who it was for

• They didn’t understand Christ’s suffering and glory through this

3. Prophecy was for you (us)

1 Peter 1:1-7 [New Living Translation (NLT)]

Greetings from Peter

1 This letter is from Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ. I am writing to God’s chosen people who are living as foreigners in the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia.[a] 2 God the Father knew you and chose you long ago, and his Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed him and have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. May God give you more and more grace and peace. 3All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is by his great mercy that we have been born again, because God raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Now we live with great expectation, 4 and we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay. 5 And through your faith, God is protecting you by his power until you receive this salvation, which is ready to be revealed on the last day for all to see. 6 So be truly glad.[b] There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you have to endure many trials for a little while. 7 These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
